I painted this piece during a quiet stretch at our home in Texas—a time marked by loss and difficult news. It was the week James Van Der Beek and Robert Duvall passed away, and when I learned that another classmate had been diagnosed with cancer. All of it pulled me into that deep awareness of how fragile and fleeting life can be.
The life cycle of a leaf mirrors our own: the tender beginning of budding, the vibrant stretch of growth and purpose, the slow shift of aging, and the final release. In this painting, the leaf becomes a stand‑in for the people we love—those who have shaped us, changed us, and continue to live on in memory even after they’re gone. This leaf endures on the canvas, just as the presence of those we’ve lost endures in us.
